Hobbies & Activities for People with Disabilities

If you're looking to step out of your comfort zone and want to try something new and fun, here are some ideas to inspire you.

Adapted Sports For Kids

Joining an adaptive sport is a great way to meet new friends in a fun, supportive environment. Some common adaptive sports include cycling, golf, volleyball, and swimming. If you aren't too sure what sport would suit you, try asking a physical therapist. They can help tell you what is the right activity for you and your needs.

Surfing

You don't have to say no to adventurous activities because you have limited mobility! New technology is now making beaches and the surf accessible for everyone. Disabled Surfers Association Australia are helping people with limited mobility enjoy the sun! From joint injuries to paraplegia, they can help you get into the sand and water.

Yoga and Pilates

Yoga and Pilates are great, slow-paced alternatives to active sports. There are a lot of studios in Australia that offer classes for people with limited mobility. Regular practice of yoga and pilates has many benefits like balance and stability.

Book Clubs

Reading is a wonderful way to escape into another world! Joining a book club lets you meet new people and gives you the chance to talk about your favourite books too.  If you can't physically join a meeting in person, you can do a Zoom video session and share your thoughts from home.

Art Classes

Whether you're a creative or never held a paintbrush, art classes are both fun and therapeutic. It's the perfect activity to express yourself and learn a new skill. While painting is a common and popular art class, many places offer pottery classes too. Why not try a bit of everything and see what you like best!

Papercrafting

Papercrafting is a hobby that uses paper to be creative. Supplies are easily found at your local craft store, and you only need a few items to get started. There are also a lot of resources online, from YouTube videos to Pinterest boards, to inspire you. Some forms of paper crafting include scrapbooking, paper folding or paper piercing.
